To a man whose mind is free there is something even more intolerable in the sufferings of animals than in the sufferings of man. We follow the ways of wolves, the habits of tigers: or, rather we are worse than they. To them nature has assigned that they should be thus fed, while God has honoured us with rational speech and a sense of equity. And yet we are become worse than the wild beast. This is the works of the devil that we slaughter animals for food and clothing; soon we will be slaughtering each other. God gave our first parents the food He designed that the race should eat. It was contrary to His plan to have the life of any creature taken. There was to be no death in Eden. The fruit of the trees and plants in the garden was the food man's wants required.I love my garden, and I love working in it. To potter with green growing things, watching each day to see the new sprouts come up, is like taking a hand in creation.
