I consider being vegan essential to living ethically. Like other issues of social justice have been at different points in history, the suffering of non-human individuals is largely ignored, even by those who claim to be progressive and rational. There is simply no argument for the consumption of animals that stands up to scrutiny. We do not need animal flesh for necessary nutrients. The fact that other species eat meat, is hardly a good argument. The crucial difference between the human species and nonhuman species, our ability to reason, is exactly why we shouldn't. I am a communist. Capitalism can never provide even the most basic necessities for all, we need a new society. Housing for the poor, not golden parachutes for executives.
