Hi, I'm John (he/him).

I am an IT professional but have been moving to software development with a focus on VR and simulations and I also do a stream where we explore worlds as well as create our own worlds and avatars. Needless to say, with a shifting career, most of my free time is spent on learning, developing, and anything VR.

From COVID I have a beard but haven't decided if I'm going to keep it yet. I am also vaccinated, keep my distance, and mask up.

For other hobbies, I very much enjoy camping (but don't have anyone to go with), hiking, going to the observatory, or general stargazing. Now that my daughter (21yr) is living on her own and COVID is relaxing, I'm starting to realize that travel is a possibility as well. I have always enjoyed learning languages - looking to do my Japanese N5 proficiency test - and would love to utilize and learn any language in an immersive setting.

At the moment I cannot have a pet where I live, but I have always wanted a pug or Boston terrier and would definitely adopt one when I can.

As I was a single parent for a couple of decades, I am now looking at traveling. Japan is at the top of my list.

I would say that I am pretty balanced and well rounded - I'm an academic (biology and anthropology) who can repair or build all kinds of things. I'm also an artist and traveler. I'm generally clean and organized but not OCD. I'm cultured but not a snob. I generally think outside the mainstream - good thing I don't mind being out of step with the crowd. I'm a Canadian who has lived in or very near, mostly in, DC for going on 29 years. I watch... not quite as much live cinema as I used to but as long as I've llved in DC, I've loved that there are so many museums, art galleries, and embassies with some sort of film program the Freer Gallery's is particularly great, the NGA's less so than it used to be - plus the AFI, providing opportunities to see movies one would hardly ever have a chance to see on a big screen otherwise. In addition to cinema, I read a lot, mostly fiction, that mostly science fiction and fantasy with occasional classics, forays into other genres, and non-fiction thrown in for variety - I was rationing Jane Austen novels severely since she isn't writing any more of them but have recently decided on a sprint to finish Northanger Abbey and Persuasion so I can start reading some of the professionally published Austen fan fiction that has accumulated (there are apparently at least two published mystery novels revolving around the murder of Wickham, from Pride and Prejudice, one of which is set in a gathering of the protagonists of all Austen's novels, so obviously I need to have read them all before I can read that). And I exercise a lot, mostly running or, to be more precise, mostly orienteering (look it up if you haven't heard of it or ask me if you prefer) and a fair bit of running as training for the orienteering, plus some mostly utilitarian cycling, less than I used to since I changed careers some years ago and a little later gave in to microeconomics and bought my first car so I could drive to work sites rather than messing about with air travel and rental cars for half or more of the year. It doesn't take up a lot of my time anymore - once upon a time, I took multiple classes weekly - but I also love modern dance and dance performances generally, another thing which which DC has been reasonably generous with in the time I've lived here, though with the new Trumpian takeover of the Kennedy Center, maybe a little less so going forward for the highest profile dance companies, since I'm probably going to be boycotting the Kennedy Center from now until it doesn't feel like an endorsement of what he's doing there and, by extension, of the whole MAGA project to darken its door. I became vegetarian at 18, mostly for environmental and health reasons (with an assist from my sister and I being left to fend for ourselves while my parents were on sabbatical and figuring out what to do with grains, legumes and vegetables - fruit are easy, fortunately - being enough to take on, thank you very much). I own a wok and use it frequently, though not on as varied a set of dishes as I aspire to. I also own a slow cooker but have only tried a handful of recipes in it, only one of which has become a regular thing in my culinary repertoire to date. And a fermenting crock in which I can make more than acceptable sauerkraut but have yet to succeed in making more than adequate, less than fully authentic kimchi, not that I've been very persistent. My culinary ambitions do have a tendency to exceed both my reach and my grasp - it's so much easier to cook something familar and use the time saved for the reading, film watching, and excercise - but I do like to hunt through cookbooks and online for recipes that seem plausibly within my grasp and try a new one out every so often.

I have learned to slow down and think about my actions. I am looking for someone with similar depth and who's thought about the meaning behind the things they do. I AM ALSO SEARCHING FOR LIKEMINDED PEOPLE TO GROW A COMMUNITY BASED ON CRUELTY-FREE LIVING, A DEEP CONNECTION WITH NATURE AND NON-TRADITIONAL OR NEW CULTURE! My sexual orientation doesn't fit well in a box either (sigh!)... I got rid of my mask, my ego, and stopped pretending to be satisfied with a "plain vanilla" kind of relationship. A 50% success rate for marriage doesn't suggest it is the right answer for a lot of people, does it? And how many of those marriages that don't end in divorce are really "happy"? I think many people are lying to themselves, and they identify so strongly with the socially acceptable ego-mask they are masquerading in, that they don't really know who they are or what they want! That was me once, but I no longer care about social norms more than what I feel in my own heart.

I value honesty and commitment. I think love is bigger, more beautiful, more gentle, more wild, more honesty, more fascinating than people (most people) plugged into the system can handle. And sex for me is the zenith of spiritual experiences. I love diversity and the uniqueness of the individuals I have met who have had the courage to take off their masks and live free ('cause the truth does set you free!). They have as much right to live on Earth as humans do. I enjoy films, except modern horror and do not watch films with excessive bad language and violence or sexually explicit scenes.
