There's a restaurant near me called "Not Your Average Joe's". Sadly, there's not much vegetarian food on the menu, but otherwise the menu there seems like me. The ingredients, while sometimes a bit unusual, are not particularly exotic, but the combinations are unusual. I'm like that. Characteristics you've heard of, but don't expect to find in the same person. From the heart of rural Appalachia, three Ivy League degrees, one-time motorcycle bum, Zen Buddhist, marketing consultant. For many years I was Mr. Mom. My step-daughter lives with me when she's not off to college. At present I'm working too much, due to involvement in an entrepreneurial venture in addition to my regular business, but I'm making improvement in getting my work/life balance back in order. Moved to Boston a half year ago from Syracuse via NYC. Life is finally settling down a bit: Learned some of the ropes at work, found an apartment, and sold my house back in Syracuse. I finally have time to breath! And there is an entire new city to explore. I've been seeking out vegetarian friendly restaurants, getting to some of the local theaters, and just walking around Somerville and Cambridge. Once I build up some vacation I want to travel to Europe, something I have wanted to do, but have never managed to find the time to do. I like to be active: I bike to work in Lexington most weekdays, and prefer to take public transportation and walk rather than drive. I get to see more that way, and I avoid the frustration of waiting for red lights and gridlock. I'd like to do some trail running once I find out where there are good trails, and some kayaking once I find a place to keep my kayak. I am self-described as a politically liberal, vegetarian, atheistic engineer. While this is Boston I suspect that, still, I am on the fringes.

I am a Registered Nurse who just recently relocated to Mass. Right now I'm working part-time but trying to find something a bit more permanent anywhere in the surrounding New England area. I grew up in Spain and Japan which is a big part of who I am. I do speak some Japanese (and still learning but it never seems like there's enough time!!). I love Japanese music especially (modern as well as traditional). I read books in Japanese for fun and to continue improving in the language. I read books in English too, mostly non-fiction these days. I have also been writing a three-volume novel for the last 12 years or so on and off. I think eclectic, energetic, and passionate are probably the best adjectives to describe myself. I'd descibe myself as kind, sensitive, reflective, witty, creative, psychologically aware, politically progressive, nonmaterialistic, and a good listener. I'm also attractive (although I'd like to lose about 30 lbs.; I've lost 20 so far). I'm 49, but look younger. My photo was taken Feb. 2008. My interests include playing music, writing poetry and children's stories, drawing portraits, taking long walks, reading, and my cats. I work as a reading teacher and Suzuki violin teacher. I also proofread a leftist journal, though I seem to have something like a learning disability when it comes to understanding politics. I love children, although I have none of my own. I've been nearly vegan for about 7 years, and recently began a raw food diet.

About 17 years ago, I had health issues - high blood pressure and high cholesterol, among a few other maladies that were signs of age and disease. I started substituting and eliminating certain items from my diet, and each change would simply make me feel better. I added a little exercise to the lifestyle, and within 6 months had lost 50 pounds, reversed the high BP and cholesterol levels, as well as reversed the beginnings of arthritus. One year into the new lifestyle, I had made so many changes that I realized one day that I was, in fact, vegan. It was completely evolutionary, and not specifically my intent, although I am now rather proud of my way of life. But by the process of improving my health, naturally evolved my spiritual self, and, of course, my respect and love for all things natural. I'm not a true activist, but rather a defender of animals in my casual interactions and discussions with my fellow two-legged creatures. I work in the IT field, having had a business of my own for the past 11 years.

Slightly nutty, extremely honest... I'd rather be hiking or kayaking, hanging out at a playground or jumping on a trampoline than spending time in a bar or club. I'm not at all religious but Buddhist philosophy makes a lot of sense to me. I love roller derby and horror moves even though I can't stand violence. I like coffee more than I should, I can't spell without spell-check and I'm a lousy singer but that doesn't stop me from belting out 80's songs (especially hair-metal) in the car when I don't think anyone can hear me. I want to learn to hula hoop, trade in my guitar (which I can't play) for a ukulele and to speak another language. I'm really shy but I think I'm pretty fun once you get me out of my shell. I made a change to my diet relatively recently (May 2011). After a LOT of trial and error, I landed on a mostly vegan, low sugar, (nearly) gluten free diet. Although I've embraced this diet for health reasons and don't have qualms socializing with meat eaters, I'm finding it difficult to meet new people since adopting this lifestyle. So much of the Boston social scene revolves around eating out and I prefer to cook at home.

I am a veg-aquarian in that I do eat seafood and sushi. If you're open to a great guy who has everything in order I'd really like to talk to you some more. My career is in education and multimedia. Have you had to explain your diet like a thousand times and gotten the myriad of responses from people feeling bad, or wondering how you survive, or taking it personally when they really are just not progressive and interesting? I suppose that is the chief reason I'm here. I'm not a veggie-snob, eco-snob, or recycle-snob. It turns me off when a persons response to poor leadership in this country is to just sit around, complain, slander, and watch Jon Stewart(however cathartic, hehe), and basically be shiftless in the face of ignorance. I'm a very happy raw food enthusiast. Threw out my stove and oven three years ago. I feel very at home eating raw. I'm a photographer with a thriving business and great clients. I care about the environment and wish small actions could have larger effects. I love spending time outdoors. There is a place near Boston where you can collect great spring water and that is the only water I drink. After collecting spring water I go for a walk with the dog in the woods. I am adventurous...would rather be out trying something new than sitting in a movie theater. Not that movies don't have their place...especially in the winter. I love New England - all the seasons. I work out and am fit - being healthy is a major part of my happiness. I love wordplay in conversation and crossword puzzles. Reading, talking - serious topics and lighthearted ones. I believe food has really called me my whole life. And I truly believe humans to be omnivores only in necessary situations. I have two dogs and one cat, all rescues, and I will always have animals close to me. I love fashion, skip the fur, let the leather be second-hand. I was vegan, best time of my life. I have so few vegetarians in my life, if any at all, but it has been me since I was 11, of course I went through all different levels of commitment. I like to hike, or just to go for long walks (cliche, but what could I put here that isn't?) I don't believe in sex without a true soul connection, not necessarily love or a soul mate, just someone who can see your truth and not reject that. When I find a person I feel comfortable with I am truly passionate. I just know that non-veg relationships make it impossible for me to be completely close to that person.
