I lived and worked on Kauai for years as an RN to the local community. I loved being on the island, and experiencing island life. In 2005, I took an early retirement. Then, (being the gypsy spirit that I am), took off for unknown adventures and traveled to a variety of interesting countries around the world. Take a look at my photos, and see if you can guess any of the places I enjoyed exploring. Also during that time, I lived and traveled aboard a sailboat for 3 years. photos here.
After living for decades in the tropics, I am presently located in the Pacific Northwest. It is definitely beautiful here, but lately I have been feeling a pull back to the islands. I miss the sandy beaches, warm salt water, palm trees and waterfalls. (Not to mention, it was 28 here last night!)
I am returning to Kauai February 2012 and stay for a couple of months. I'm ready for my next great adventure!
I'm looking forward to returning to some of my favorite places island wide- from Kokee to Sleeping Giant to Haena. I am also open to discovering new places and making new memories. I do enjoy my times of quiet and solitude, but it would be fun to share some activities with a a new found friend.
I have no Great Expectations during my visit to my beloved Garden Isle, other than to enjoy the beauty that is Kauai. If I should happen to encounter a kindred spirit along the way, what a blessing that would be! Maybe by the end of the month I'll be humming "Give me one reason to stay here, and I'll turn right back around".

I've got a lot of energy. I think it's the intensely healthy lifestyle that I lead. Last summer, as part of my job, I hiked alone for over 500 miles in the Trinity Alps. That kind of intimate connection to the environment also keeps your intuitions on track. I have a tangible bond with my acreage abutting the Alps (where I have my primary residence). I've lived here for 30 years, and it is a veritable off-the-grid paradise. Turbines on my creek provide all of the modern amenities, and the 1/4-mile walk to my house ensures privacy and an unfettered connection with nature... I'm a very balanced and centered guy --not necessarily easy to do any more in our culture! I'm in great shape and would like nothing better than to find a woman that has a LOT of energy and loves to explore new venues --especially (but not exclusively) those involving nature. Kayaking and hiking, with bicycling spiced in, can really make for some enlightening experiences. Exploration, both planetary and interpersonal, isn't that what it's all about?

I like having intellectual conversations, deep ones and also light playful ones, engaging in bantering wordplay (or other wordplay), or finding someone willing to seek out the devil in the details (even just to pull his tail and grin). I like the outdoors, but particularly water. I've been river kayaking a couple of times and I'd like to do more, and also learn to sail and surf. I'm not so much into white water or extreme sports, in general, for the sake of risk-taking or an adrenaline rush, but I do also like indoor rock climbing for the physical exertion and the challenge; I suppose once I've gotten good at it, I could be convinced to visit a real rock :-). I'm a sometime social and political activist. I enjoy most types of dance, but especially Lindy Hop (a Swing dance) and Argentine Tango. I'm also somewhat interested in improvisational movement like Contact Improv, which I've danced many times. I'm interested in getting started with Yoga (again) and T'ai Chi and meditation.

Although during work I'm a people person, sharing solitude is important. Daily, I try to fit in some stretching, tai chi or a nice run at the track. I've been a devoted vegetarian for 33 years and am very proud to live my life in that way yet have learned not to push my views on others who havent found the way. Its important for me to be connected with a vegetarian sole as i believe in the afterlife. Although I've done well in my career and enjoy the finer things in life.. there is so much more to do. Oh sure I have great hobbies..as collector of vintage photography, post WWI and WWII tin wind up toys..Borein sketches and a trove of paintings from American artists. Yet going on road trips into small towns of America or diverting to see the wild flowers in the Mojave Nature Preserve is just as exciting as collecting. Health is wealth and remembering that has true value as well.

So even though my self-deprecating self is very hesitant to use too flattering adjectives, there must be some truth to it. Born into a vegetarian family, I've been vegetarian most of my life. (I've had a few rebellious moments, though). So, it's been difficult to pair up, even though people are becoming more conscious about food these days. You don't have to be a strict vegetarian, but it would be nice to find someone who is a little different, say into Slow Food, or the like.
